May 13, 2010: Pet Paradise Helps With Oil Spill in the Gulf Using Pet Hair.

Pet Paradise is collecting pet hair to help with the cleanup effort of the oil spill in the Gulf. Hair is an efficient and abundant material for collecting and containing petroleum spills. Pet and human hair absorbs oil, estimated that 1lb of pet hair can absorb up to 1 quart of oil in 1 minute. The collection of hair is being used to absorb some of the oil along the beaches in the Gulf.

The Oil Spill Hairbooms and Hairmats Initiative is being led by Matter of Trust, a non-profit charity organization. Thousands of salons, groomers, wool farmers, and individuals are collecting hair and coordinating with the organization. The hair fibers are stuffed into recycled nylons and covered in mesh to make booms or, when possible, woven into hair mats.
